The Akans in Ghana refer to kente as nwentoma, meaning woven cloth.  It was said the Kente cloth weavers would unravel silk trade cloth from China and re-weave it into kente patterns. Kente cloth is often commissioned for special occasions and therefore the materials are passed down through generations. Every aspect of each design has meaning. Blue signifies pure spirit/harmony. Yellow is fertility.

A trip to Ghana's Ashanti Kingdom will give you the opportunity to watch some experts make kente cloth. There is a village near Tamale that you can visit and learn how to weave kente cloth yourself.  Until then, enjoy our Kente Cloth inspired pieces.
